Masters of luxury

The Oberoi Group has sharpened the luxury hospitality experience to a point where it competes with the best in the world. Express Hospitality reviews its strategy so far

Since its inception in 1934, The Oberoi Group has honed its vision for luxury, starting from its first single property, the Clarkes in Shimla, which has expanded to all 33 properties under its umbrella today. The Oberoi Hotels and Resorts was ranked Asia's leading hotel brand at the 2007 World Travel Awards. Since the last decade, the group has redefined the luxury segment with the new luxury leisure hotels that have a 'Vilas' suffix to their name.

In 2004, The Oberoi Group and Hilton International entered into a strategic alliance for marketing and co-branding hotels in India under the 'Trident Hilton' brand. While The Oberoi Group continued to plan, staff and operate the hotels, Hilton International was responsible for the sales and marketing of the hotels. The alliance was terminated soon after and effective April 2008, 'Trident Hilton Hotels' in India has been rebranded as 'Trident Hotels'. Effective April 2008, 'Trident Hilton' hotels located in Gurgaon (Delhi National Capital Region), Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Cochin, Bhubaneswar and Chennai are designated as 'Trident'. For example, 'Hilton Towers' in Mumbai is now 'Trident, Nariman Point, Mumbai'. With the termination, and in addition to planning, staffing and operating the hotels, The Oberoi Group also supports the sales and marketing of Trident Hotels worldwide.

About The Oberoi Group
The Oberoi Group owns and manages 33 properties across several countries under the luxury 'Oberoi' and five-star 'Trident' brands. The Group is also engaged in travel and tour services, car rentals, airport bars and restaurants, in-flight catering, delicatessen products, project management and corporate air charters. Internationally-recognised for all-round excellence and unparalleled levels of service, Oberoi Hotels & Resorts have received innumerable awards and accolades. A distinctive feature of The Group's hotels is their highly motivated and well-trained staff that provides the kind of attentive, personalised and warm service that is rare today. Trident hotels are five-star hotels that have established a reputation for excellence and are acknowledged for offering quality and value.

As a part of the rebranding, Trident Hotels also launched its own dedicated GDS Chain Code "TH". The new GDS code came into effect on 1st April, 2008, from which date all Trident hotels are available under the unique "TH" designation, instead of the Hilton International code "HL".

The last decade has seen the emergence of luxury hotels under the Oberoi Group both in India and abroad. The company is also putting efforts into its flight catering business, where it has a strong presence. The modernisation of airports and the growth in airline traffic is seen as fostering opportunity for the group as a revenue-earning area of the hospitality business.
