Mumbai Hotels Get Eco Conscious

ITC Steps Into Green Mode

ITC Grand Maratha Sheraton & Towers, Mumbai collaborated with the Times Foundation to commemorate World Environment Day at the hotel recently. This day is observed internationally to promote a greener, cleaner and pollution-free earth.

As part of its annual celebrations the hotel hosted a session on environment and related issues for NGO's and staff and managers of the hotel. The session was conducted by Niranjan Khatri, general manager, WelcomEnviron initiatives, ITC's Hotels Division.

The guest of honour for the occasion was Indian film personality Amisha Patel. A PUC unit was set-up outside the hotel to provide free checks for all guests entering or passing by the hotel.

The Leela Celebrates World Environment Day

The Leela Kempinski, Mumbai recently added two hundred plants to 'The garden by the Leela' to commemorate World Environment Day. This green initiative of the hotel covers 150 acres of land planted with saplings on both side of the landscaped gardens outside the Chatrapati Shivaji domestic and Chatrapati Shivaji International (98.25 acres) airports.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of environmental excellence, chairman of the Leela Group Capt Krishnan Nair was awarded with the prestigious Bombay Chamber Civic Award 2004-05. He was also honoured with the prestigious PATA award of merit 2005 for his strong commitment to the environment.

Rodas Celebrates Environment Week

Rodas, the designer ecotel in Mumbai celebrated 'Eco-Week' recently during which, the entire team at the hotel urged the local people and guests alike to join in the ecology conservation drive.

On 'world no tobacco day' people were requested not to smoke especially in public areas. There was a silent protest against smoking by turning all the ashtrays in the hotel upside down. Also guests were encouraged to throw their cigarette packs in the dustbin and those who did so were publicly applauded.

During the course of the entire week, guests were encouraged to reduce wastage of water and electricity. Simple measures such as closing the water taps when not in use; segregating wet and dry garbage at source; avoiding wastage of food and also carrying an eco-friendly cloth bag for shopping to reduce usage of plastic bags will be advised. Besides this the green team of the hotel led by executive chef Nilesh Limaye organised a unique eco-cooking contest using organic vegetables to prepare dishes like salads, sandwiches etc.
