Standardisation - Need Of The Hour

Jyoti Koul - New Delhi

In the hotel equipment-manufacturing segment, the market size is expanding with several new opportunities coming its way. While international competition exists, still about 65 per cent of the demand is met by local equipment. In such a scenario what is really required to discipline the industry is a regulatory system or standardisation by the government. Hotel equipment manufacturers in the country feel that while standardisation would come from the government, industry is not lobbying for the cause.

According to suppliers, not just standardisation, but also quality and service authentication measures need to be put in place. Sunil Khanna, managing director, Aster Technologies feels that the government and the industry needs to focus on a two point agenda. "Firstly, there has to be basic standardisation about dimensions. Secondly, standardisation is required as far as quality, material, voltage, safety aspects, health agencies and other various crucial operating parameters are concerned. This initiative has to come from the government's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Standardisation will also help us in reducing inventory-carrying cost," said Khanna
